Growing up in Scottdale, GA, going to the park was a cherished tradition for me and my friends. Living on Glendale Rd, Tobie Grant Park was our go-to spot, conveniently located nearby. Every week, we'd gather there to join in the fun with other neighborhood kids. One of our favorite pastimes was watching basketball teams compete on the courts. The park was also a popular venue for birthday parties and special events, a tradition that still thrives today.

     Tobie Grant Park held a special allure with its expansive pool. As kids, we'd spend hours mesmerized by the older kids performing daring tricks on the diving board. Summer camp at Tobie was another highlight, offering unforgettable memories and new friendships. Unfortunately, the field where we enjoyed family softball tournaments was replaced during a park upgrade.

In the fall, the annual Scottdale Day festival still brings the community together for a celebration of local culture and traditions. Another park close to my heart was Hamilton Park, where youth football and baseball teams provided endless excitement. My uncle and aunt dedicated years as coaches there, and I even played a couple of seasons myself. We were proud to have Dawayne Harris, who later went on to play in the NFL, as part of our local sports scene.

Tobie Grant and Hamilton Parks shared a friendly rivalry, especially on the basketball. And it seems the spirit of competition continues, with the women's kickball team emerging. With such vibrant parks and community activities, growing up in Scottdale was truly a joyous experience filled with lasting memories

T he facility recently underwent a remarkable $10 million upgrade, transforming it into a state-of-the-art recreational hub. With new features such as upgraded multipurpose rooms, enhanced athletic equipment, and improved landscaping, Tobie Grant is now more inviting than ever.

Additionally, Tobie Grant Recreation Center hosts an exciting summer day camp called "Camp Superstars" for ages 5-15. The camp runs from June 3 to July 26, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Campers will enjoy a variety of activities including swim lessons, arts and crafts, sports, and more. The camp fee is $66 per week, which includes breakfast and lunch.

Next, we have Hamilton Recreation Center, situated at 3263 Chapel Street. Established in 1924 as a Rosenwald school, succeeding a church school for African Americans, this educational institution played a crucial role during the era of segregation in the South. The book "African-American Life in Dekalb County 1823-1970" by Herman “Skip” Mason Jr. features a photograph of the school and its students. Funded by Julius Rosenwald, the school had William Hatton as its principal, and Hatton Drive in Scottdale is named in his honor. Robert Shaw, who donated land for the school, is commemorated through Robert Shaw Elementary School and Robert Shaw Theme Elementary School.

In 1942, significant enhancements were made, including the addition of running water, a science lab, a new piano, a library, and a telephone. Notably, in 1955, Hamilton High School and Robert Shaw Elementary School were constructed opposite each other.A historic milestone was achieved in 2013 when a proclamation at a DeKalb County Commissioners hearing highlighted that this school was the first in the county to be named after an African-American, marking a significant stride in the face of segregation. Today it is run by Center Director Kiesha Howell-El, this facility boasts similar features to Tobie Grant, including a gymnasium, multipurpose rooms, and outdoor fields. With summer hours allowing for early morning activities, it's the perfect spot to start your day with some exercise or leisurely fun.
